Sandgate Canoe Club Inc held the inaugural Bramble Bay Sea Kayak Race on Sunday 30 March 2008.

“A competitive field of over 60 people enjoyed near flat conditions on Bramble Bay to mark the inaugural Bramble Bay classic as one to remember”, said Peter Eickenloff, President, Sandgate Canoe Club Inc.

“The entries included sea kayaks, single and double outrigger canoes as well as racing surf skis to give a good mix of craft.

Mr Eickenloff said “that due to the near flat conditions the fastest time of 1 hour and thirty minutes to complete the 18 km circuit may remain the course record for a number of years”

“All competitors completed the circuit within two and a half hours with the majority within two hours, which illustrates how closely contested the race was”

“The race was well supported by the Volunteer Marine Rescue Sandgate and Sandgate Yacht Club as part of the safety plan for the event”

“Participants reported that they enjoyed the course and are looking forward to next years race, said Mr Eickenloff.

“Chief Official Allana Bold and her team are to be congratulated and they have already commenced planning for next years race”

Peter Eickenloff, President Sandgate Canoe Club said,”The next race for us will be the Wetlands Wander Creek race at Shorncliffe on 22 June 2008”

“Details on the next race and full results from the Bramble Bay Classic can be obtained at www.sandgate.canoe.org.au , via sandgate@canoe.org.au or by calling the club on 0418 839 742.
